Renting a Car in Tunisia Without Unpleasant Surprises: The 2026 Guide

06/08/2026 · KiraCars team

Renting a car in Tunisia is usually simple and affordable, but a few points deserve your attention before you confirm a booking — whether with an international brand or an independent local agency.

1. Check that the agency is verified

In Tunisia, many small local agencies have no verifiable online presence. On KiraCars, every partner agency is manually checked (documents, tax registration) before being allowed to list vehicles — a control that's anything but automatic, and one that eliminates most bad surprises.

2. Understand the deposit before you sign

The deposit (or "security deposit") is handed over in cash to the agency when you pick up the keys, then returned when you drop the vehicle off, provided no damage is found. Always ask for the exact amount before booking.

3. Included mileage

Most rentals in Tunisia include a daily mileage allowance (150 to 300 km/day depending on the agency) — beyond that, a per-kilometre surcharge applies. Check this figure if you're planning a long trip (Tunis–Djerba, for example, is already about 500 km round trip).

4. Licence seniority

Agencies generally require a licence held for at least 1 year, sometimes more for SUV or premium categories. Check this condition before booking to avoid being turned away at key handover.

5. Cancellation terms

A good rule of thumb: favour platforms that clearly display their cancellation policy right on the booking page, without having to dig through 20 pages of terms and conditions.
